A couple of years ago Sony entered the hand held market with the release of their PlayStation Portable (PSP) in the hopes of competing with Nintendo. At the time, we had the Game Boy Advance, but Nintendo quickly responded with the Nintendo DS.

I’ve always felt that its going to be hard for Sony to truly compete in this area, as the type of games Sony makes don’t appeal to many hand held users. It looks like many others agree, as Gizmodo has just published 8 reasons why the PSP will never ever overtake the DS.

DS games sell better. Way better. Let’s turn away from consoles sold for a minute and look at the software moved–a stat just as important for the success of a platform. The PSP has no titles whatsoever in the top 100 of all time video game sales charts. Their best selling title is Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories which has moved a meager 4.5 million units…at least when compared to the success of the DS. From my count, the DS has 8 titles in the top 100 charts, with Nintendogs breaking the top 10 with 15.41 million copies sold worldwide. And it’s not the only title to move more than 10 million copies. Oh, and Mario and Pokemon and case closed.

It probably doesn’t seem like it to most people, but the Nintendo DS has actually been around for quite awhile now. Its always been typical in the video game industry for games to last roughly 4 years before being replaced by the next console in line, but it looks like after almost 30 years, this trend will not be continued. Maybe its the adaptability of these new consoles, or maybe its just that video gaming has finally caught up to technology, but it looks like the Nintendo DS is still going to be around for awhile.

According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata at a recent Q3 financial results conference, it looks like Nintendo’s plans involve continuing with the Nintendo DS for the foreseeable future.

“I’m quite doubtful that such a notion of platform cycles can be applied in the future…As we continue our research and study for new hardware, when we will be able to launch a new kind of hardware will actually depend on when we can change entertainment completely, and so have a strong impact on people around the world. Or, there will certainly be a time when we have to say that we have done everything possible with the current machine, that we can never propose anything new.

“Lately, I cannot say I’m making video games on the frontline of development, but as a person who used to develop software, the availability of new hardware means that we possess a new weapon,” he continued. “We long for a new weapon whenever we cry that we cannot fight anymore with the current weapons. But today’s situation is such that we are not desperate for any new weapons at all.

“Whenever we are working on so-called next generation hardware, we are always thinking in terms of the future. We need to forecast what the future will be like with the expected evolution of new technologies which are available at any given time, and try to identify the so-called “sweet spot” of technology over the next few years.”

Are you still happy with the Nintendo DS, or were you looking forward to a replacement?
